Robotic searchlights to light up Vancouver sky during Olympics - The Province newspaper

VANCOUVER - Beams of light pointed towards the stars will illuminate English Bay and the night sky in downtown Vancouver next February as part of a Cultural Olympiad and City of Vancouver special event for the 2010 Winter Games.

The cool part? The robotic searchlights will follow designs created by people around the world and delivered via the Internet. Called Vectorial Elevation, it is the first time the internationally celebrated work of art will be displayed in Canada and over a body of water.

The light show, which organizers say will create a "quiet canopy of light in the night sky above and on the sparkling surface of English Bay below" will launch at dusk on Feb. 4.This large-scale temporary public art installation is co-commissioned by the City of Vancouver's Olympic and Paralympic Public Art Program and Vancouver 2010 Cultural Olympiad, presented by Bell, with support from the Province of Quebec. The installation - considered one of the world's largest interactive artworks - is by Canadian artist Rafael Lozano-Hemmer and is part of CODE, the Cultural Olympiad's Digital Edition.

"Vectorial Elevation is a unique, magical work that local residents, visitors and people from around the world can enjoy," Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson said in a release. "The installation will not only brighten our night skies, but also bring the Games to the world in an unexpected, interactive way."

More than two million people are expected to view the installation in person in Metro Vancouver, as well as internationally via www.vectorialvancouver.net or www.vancouver2010.com/code. The event runs regardless of the weather until Feb. 28.

Visitors to www.vectorialvancouver.net can design how the lights will move, their angles and how they are clustered in timed sequences to create their own patterns for the world to see. A personalized webpage will be automatically created for each participant to document their design. Organizers estimate 130,000 different patterns will be created in the 24 days the project operates from dusk to dawn.

Vision's rough trade - 24H - ALEX G. TSAKUMIS

You still don't think Vision Vancouver is a callous group? Last week, when I exposed the Burrard Bridge bike trial as the unnecessary eco-fraud that it is, I was the subject of Internet scorn from the people I have appropriately labeled 'cycling fascists': Manipulating my column and lying about what I wrote, subsequently spreading them to the zombies in their midst.

Then, I received a polite note from a Jonathan Ross, who is a failed Vision Vancouver organizer and Internet troll, who runs a Vision Vancouver-inspired blog called civicscene.ca.

After a brief e-mail exchange where I told him what he could do with his baiting, he replied (and this is verbatim, my darlings):
Click here to find out more!

"...you bald, fat mother f#%&er".

These are the people "defending" Vision Vancouver.

It should scare you.

Zombie outbreak would be 'disastrous': mathematicians - National Post

OTTAWA -- A team of Canadian mathematicians have been picking their large, delectable brains over whether humankind could survive a zombie apocalypse.

Their conclusion?

"An outbreak of zombies infecting humans is likely to be disastrous, unless extremely aggressive tactics are employed against the undead," says the paper, titled When Zombies Attack! Mathematical Modelling of an Outbreak of Zombie Infection.

"Thus, if zombies arrive, we must act quickly and decisively to eradicate them before they eradicate us."

Zombie walk Saturday in Downtown Vancouver

Zombie Walk

Zombie walks, organized public gatherings with people dressed as zombies, have taken place across North America as early as 2001 in Sacramento, California; the Sacramento event was originally intended to promote a local midnight movie festival. It didn't take long before a slew of cities across the continent began their own walks and adopted them as annual affairs. Vancouver's first undead jaunt took place Aug. 27, 2005 and had over 400 participants. This Saturday's march is expected to draw more than 2,000. Walkers are to meet at 2 p.m. on the north side of the Vancouver Art Gallery. The walk kicks off at 3 p.m.

B.C. brings in sweet fruit crops, but low prices sour growers - Vancouver Sun

Fruit growers were blessed with excellent weather this year. But that hasn't translated into a great year for the province's cherry and blueberry growers, as a bumper crop has flooded the market and pushed down prices.

Many types of fruit have benefited from the lack of a winter frost and an ideal summer. But other fruit such as apples and grapes won't likely suffer from an oversupply when harvested later this year, industry officials said.

Letters to the Editor Vancouver Sun

Critical of Critical Mass

Re: Respect, not tension, on display as bikes take over streets, Aug. 1

If keeping a family with a five-month-old baby trapped in a car on one of the hottest afternoons of the year is an example of respect, I wonder what an example of disrespect would look like.

Critical of Critical Mass

Re: Police must act when cyclists' protest threatens rights of others, editorial, July 31

Bravo to The Sun's editorial board for taking a strong stand in championing the rights of all citizens with respect to the cyclists' Critical Mass ride. It is indeed a sad day for Vancouver when both our mayor and our police officials demonstrate so little backbone that they no longer choose to uphold the law but instead turn our city over to a protest group that threatens and bullies the rest of us. Now I know that any special-interest group with moxie and clout can hold others hostage to its cause and, even more astonishing, not have to obey the law -- a recipe for anarchy if I ever saw one.

Critical Mass Vancouver July 31, 2009 Part 8

Watching this video, it doesn't take long to notice that this isn't about sharing space with bikers, but about occupation of a critical transportation corridor - and on the Friday of a long weekend no less. This isn't about participating, but about exluding others, and incoveniencing the maximum number of people not in their camp. Notice how they block both lanes of the bridge and stop in the middle of the bridge and hang out. What purpose does this possibly serve? I suppose the critically injured person sitting in an ambulance is shit out of luck.

What's even more amazing is that the current city authorities have taken the position that it is better to "avoid confrontation" with anarchists, than to maintain freedom of movement for law-abiding citizens. The police actually authorize unlawful behaviour rather that maintain order.

If the current city officials can't or won't maintain rule of law, citizens should find new ones that can and will. Otherwise the chaos and anarchy will spread.

Faulty argument - Letter to Editor - The Province

The police position that this evening's Critical Mass "protest" is "protected by Charter rights" is utter nonsense.

The Charter protects Canadians from governmental action which infringes fundamental freedoms and then only to the extent that the government action is not a reasonable limitation in a free and democratic society. Just what government action is it that is being protested?

Further, who gave the police the right to determine that a Charter right is at issue? Those judgments are reserved for the judiciary or elected officials.

The "blockade" of public streets is a violation of the law and it is not up to the police to decide which laws they will enforce or not. The police do not have the right to abrogate my entitlement to live in a society of laws.

Donald Jordan, Q.C., Vancouver

Cyclists' sense of entitlement excludes any respect for rules - The Province

Rules are like kryptonite to cyclists.* Stop signs are there for amusement and "one way," apparently, means "any one way you wish."

Many of them don't wear helmets. The sidewalk is the same as the street. And I swear, if I ever saw a cyclist signal a turn I would drop dead in gobstruck shock.

All this is nothing new.

Vancouver cyclists have always had a difficult relationship with rules.

Vancouver police predict Critical Mess on Friday - The Province

"Critial Mass" bycicle ride has morphed into a major traffic disruption.

Police must act when cyclists' protest threatens rights of others - Vancouver Sun

Robertson's explanation to the Vancouver Sun editorial board Thursday that it is unlikely much can be done about today's illegal ride because it is difficult to communicate with a group that has no identifiable leaders is lame.

He should state clearly that, as with all citizens, the members of Critical Mass are expected to obey the law. He should say that all citizens can expect the law to be enforced. He should say that anyone who starts flouting the law, either by recklessly blocking traffic, running red lights or failing to wear helmets, will face legal consequences.

Critical Mass claims to be speaking up for the rights of cyclists. If they can't understand that other people have rights as well, it's time for the police to step in.

Audiences willing to give Baron Cohen money whether they like him or not - National Post

- reviews have been violently divided, with many people raising the question of whether Baron Cohen is exposing homophobia or enabling it with the controversial character of Bruno. Proving that rousing debate makes for strong ticket sales, Bruno raked in more than US$30-million during its opening weekend last week.

It is great excess - Panel movie review of Bruno - National Post

Alison I'm constantly amazed that Sacha Baron Cohen has managed to parlay his subversive, confrontational performance art into a successful mainstream Hollywood career. As a film (and as a character), Bruno is unpleasant and not particularly funny. Some of his stunts are cheap and unenlightening (I could have done without that scene at the swinger's party). But the climactic scene at the UFC fight is an incredible act of political theatre, as he effectively exposes the hypocritical fine line between homophobia and homoeroticism.

’Morally dangerous’ Bruno banned in Ukraine - National Post

KIEV • Ukraine has banned the hit comedy Bruno on the grounds that its "unjustified" showing of genitals and homosexual sex could have a damaging effect on Ukrainians' moral health, officials said Wednesday.

The film, which stars Cohen as a gay Austrian fashionista with a habit of making outrageous remarks, has already hit the top spot at the North American box office.

But Ukraine's film censors were less impressed, with nine members out of the culture ministry's 14-person commission voting for a total ban.

"The Ukrainian ministry of culture has decided to ban all showings of this film on Ukrainian territory," the ministry of culture said in a letter to the Ukrainian film distributor Sinergia, a copy of which was obtained by AFP.

Terrorists threaten Sacha Baron Cohen - National Post

Sacha Baron Cohen's mockumentary hijinks have gotten him in trouble again, only this time it's not with university students worried about their street cred. It's with terrorists. WorldNetDaily's Jerusalem bureau chief Aaron Klein has announced that he received a statement from the Al Aqsa Martyrs Brigades, the terrorist group interviewed in Baron Cohen's new film Bruno:

"The Al Aqsa Martyrs Brigades, the terrorist group depicted in the film "Bruno," is "very upset" their group's namesake and former member was featured in a film about a homosexual character that includes graphic depictions of homosexual sex. The group, as well as individual members, released a statement to WND's Jerusalem bureau chief Aaron Klein that includes a veiled threat against the movie's star, Sacha Baron Cohen:

"We reserve the right to respond in the way we find suitable against this man (Cohen)" said the statement. "This movie was part of a conspiracy against the Al Aqsa Martyrs Brigades," continued the statement, released through a senior member of the group in the West Bank. "According to what we checked there was no meeting about the real context of the film. This was a dirty use of our brother, Aiman, and we don't accept that the name of the Al Aqsa Martyrs Brigades is part of the film."

Aiman is a reference to Ayman Abu Aita, who was interviewed in the movie "Bruno" and labeled as a "terrorist leader" from the Brigades division in the West Bank city of Bethlehem. Aita told Klein yesterday the movie mislabels him and that Cohen conducted the interview under false pretenses. Aita said he is pursuing legal action against Cohen."

Hold off on Twitter -- fix your website first - Vancouver Sun

You thought this column was going to tell you that you're missing the boat because your company is not on Twitter or blogging. Wrong. Maybe the problem is that you have not created an iPhone app yet, or that you don't even know if there is a Facebook page for the brands, products and services that you sell. Wrong again. All of the attention you think you should be spending on online marketing in the many digital channels will bring your company zero return if you don't have a website that is easy to use and findable by all of the search engines (yes, that includes Google, Microsoft and Yahoo!).

It's time to get back to basics.

The Junos rock Vancouver - Vancouver Sun

Four days of energy, parties and shows help city lose its no-fun reputation

In a very un-West Coast display of unabashed delirium, fans lined a red carpet outside GM Place's Gate 10 for hours before the show. There was plenty of screaming and hair shaking when anyone stepped out of a limousine, although because most of the musicians dressed down and everyone else -- including many fans -- dressed up, the hair shaking might have been as much from confusion as from excitement.
