USA grinds out 5-3 win over Canada - CTV February 21, 2010 9:55 PM ET CTV

All is not lost - Men's team still have shot at gold

Canada's road to a gold medal at the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics just got more difficult.

With the victory, the Americans win Group A and earn the automatic berth to the quarterfinal round. Canada finishes second in the group and must now play Germany on Tuesday in a qualification game.

If Canada beats Germany, it may set up a monster quarterfinal matchup. Since Russia has already earned a berth and is the third seed, it is likely that Canada will meet Russia on Wednesday.

Before a booming crowd so fitting of a rivalry of this magnitude goaltender Ryan Miller was outstanding for Team USA, stopping 42 of 45 shots Team Canada fired at him. Martin Brodeur made 18 saves in the Canadian net.

Mr. Hockey calls Team Canada 'strong'

The two men known respectively as "Mr. Hockey" and "The Great One" are hopeful that Team Canada can win gold at the Vancouver Olympics, but they say it will be a tough competition.

Coaching staff set for Team Canada: reports - CBC June 23, 2009

Detroit Red Wings coach Mike Babcock will be named head coach of Canada's 2010 Olympic men's hockey team, and he'll be joined by an all-star lineup of assistants, according to several reports.

Ken Hitchcock, Lindy Ruff and Jacques Lemaire are expected to be named assistant coaches under Babcock when the coaching staff is officially announced Thursday.

Team Canada executive director Steve Yzerman wouldn't confirm Babcock as his choice during a Tuesday conference call announcing Yzerman's selection to the Hockey Hall of Fame, but he did say the entire coaching staff will be revealed Thursday during a press conference in Montreal.

Babcock, 46, has been a frontrunner for the head coaching position due mostly to his success with the Wings — the team for which Yzerman played 22 seasons and now serves as vice-president and alternate governor.

He already has the support of The Great One, either way.

"Being in Detroit, such a great hockey city, he understands the scenario that [the players] are under," said Wayne Gretzky, who was speaking at an Olympic sponsorship event in Vancouver on Tuesday.

Hands to yourself, wear the right socks, city workers told - Vancouver Sun January 26, 2010

Smile gently, don't point and make sure you wear socks that match your pants when the Olympic dignitaries come to town.

Those are just some of the pointers given to city employees to make sure they don't offend Olympics dignitaries and foreign guests and embarrass the city during the 2010 Games.

City of Vancouver pays $377,000 for Olympic tickets - Vancouver Sun January 25, 2010

The City of Vancouver is spending $377,370 to buy just over 2,000 tickets to the 2010 Winter Olympics.

Of that, more than 70 per cent is for just two sports: hockey and curling.

But the city is also buying some of the best seats in BC Place for elected officials for the opening and closing ceremonies.
